Beregond leaves Russell, with a promise to return soon, in one form or another and let him know how his talk with Smith turns out.

He arrives at Smith's workplace, wearing suit pants, no dark glasses, and a tye dyed shirt.

Smith! Are you here?

A giant "Genius at work. Do Not Disturb" flashes in front of Beregond, complete with the marquee and blink tags.

Beregond rolls his eyes, and quietly sits down to wait, staring intently at Smith.

I've got all day. And no where else to be.

"Good for you, Beregond," replies Smith absent-mindedly, typing furiously on the keyboard.

Beregond whistles "Ramble On", slightly off key, and taps his fingers incessantly

Smith presses the "mute" button on his newly created Beregond remote control.

Beregond clears his throat, but nothing happens. Fine, then. He brings up an old abacus program, holding the device in his hands, and starts calculating Pi to the nth digit, clicking the beads rapidly.

Smith frowns and mutes the abacus program. A long string of numbers begin to scroll by Beregond's eyes.

Much faster, you know.

Ah, indeed it is. Well, now that I have your attention, could I talk to you about something?

Fine, then. There must be other Agents around more capable of multitasking. I'll just be taking my body and going then, if you'll hand it over, please?

I thought you told me to dispose of it?

I've just spent the afternoon with Russell, and he does not have it. I believe you were going to offer it to him for ritual burial. Therefore, you must still have it if he does not.

Unless you've graced the garbage compactor with my lithe form?

I must have misheard you, then. I thought you went to Russell to tell him that you want the body to be disposed, and to stop taking up electricity.

Plans change. We spoke of other matters. This still does not change the fact that he does not have the body and you have not said if you still do.

Feeling stubborn today, Smith? I would think you'd gladly get it off your hands.

Smith waves and the cryogenic chamber becomes visible in the corner of the room.

Help yourself.

Beregond walks towards the chamber, shaking his head. He knew Smith still had possession of the body.

He reaches to touch the chamber, feels a spike of power and is slammed into the wall.

*dazed, slumped and fuming* Very funny.

I'll do that. *glowers, stands up, smooths my clothes and shakes off some excess static from my fingertips*

Nice to see you feeling playful. You should team up with Cupid and Loki and take your show on the road.

Speaking of Loki, maybe he could help me. I'm sure what I've got in mind is well out of your area of expertise.

Dropping out as an Agent of the Matrix due to incompetence? I dare say that's very far out of my area of expertise. *grins*

*The phrase 'turn on, tune in, drop out' flicking through my mind, bringing a twitch of a smile to my face*

I do not recall being recruited, Smith. I was drafted. Did anything in my former life indicate I would be competent at being an Agent?

Smith analyzes the question. Hmm... You may indeed be right. No sense of logic, no penchant for extrapolation and inability to consider all the information given.

I'd say it's a miracle you lasted this long!

Well, then, I'm a success! I daresay no other human has ever done what I have managed to do.

*quieter, losing the urge to keep snarking at you* But it's falling apart, Smith. I can't stay in this form. I'll become something neither Agent nor human. I miss being human.

I miss my son. And Russell deserves a better friend than I am to him now.

*frowns at the excessive emotional content in your voice* You mean, you're not human enough right now?

Re:

From: [identity profile] guide-beregond.livejournal.com
No, I'm NOT. My emotions seem to be reawakened, but I also have gigabytes of logic screaming in my head to be accounted for, to be set right. This form does not like being in turmoil! It demands order of me I cannot give it.

If I cannot return to human form I'll fragment under the stress.

May I suggest a de-fragmenting utility?

Re:

Certainly. There's a great solution. If my arm was ripped off, you'd probably suggest a brightly colored band-aid.

Are you afraid to call me a failure? Will that reflect badly on you? Why are you being so stubborn about letting me leave this form?

My, my, Beregond. Where has your sense of humour gone? I was bored, that's all. *presses a button* Go ahead. Collect your body. The firewall's been disabled.

Thank you. *tenatively reaches to touch the unit, does not end up against the wall again*

It's been a difficult day, perhaps I am being a bit testy. After all, if you hadn't helped, I would be dead with no options now. At least I have a chance to return to my body, if I can find a way.

*Grudgingly* You saved my life, and it would be rude of me not to acknowledge that.

And this is where I came in. Good day, Smith.
